Former NFL star Muhammad Wilkerson was arrested last week for driving under the influence and possession of a loaded gun. Wilkerson, who played for the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers, was pulled over by police in Morris County, New Jersey on December 22nd. During the stop, police suspected he was under the influence of alcohol, as they detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from his vehicle.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ Sports, Wilkerson admitted to coming from a New York City club before failing field sobriety tests. He was subsequently placed under arrest. During a search of his vehicle, police found an open bottle of tequila and a loaded handgun with 11 hollow point bullets.
Wilkerson claimed that the firearm was purchased in Florida, but he did not provide proper documentation. He now faces charges for operating a vehicle under the influence and unlawful possession of a handgun. He is scheduled to appear in court next month.
This is not the first time Wilkerson has been in trouble for drinking and driving. He was previously arrested for DWI in 2020 and 2019. Despite his off-field issues, Wilkerson had a successful career in the NFL. He was picked by the Jets in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft and made one Pro Bowl appearance. Throughout his eight seasons in the league, he recorded 44.5 sacks.
Wilkerson’s recent arrest highlights the dangers of drunk driving and the importance of responsible alcohol consumption. It serves as a reminder that even professional athletes are not immune to the consequences of their actions. Driving under the influence not only puts the driver’s life at risk but also endangers the lives of other innocent individuals on the road.
It is essential for everyone, regardless of their profession or status, to make responsible choices when it comes to alcohol consumption and never get behind the wheel while intoxicated. Hopefully, Wilkerson’s arrest will serve as a wake-up call for him and others who may be tempted to engage in similar behavior.
