Mariska Hargitay Reveals She is a Survivor of Sexual Assault

Mariska Hargitay, best known for her role as Detective Olivia Benson on “Law & Order: SVU,” recently opened up about her personal experience as a survivor of sexual assault. In a heartfelt article for People magazine, Hargitay shared the traumatic incident that occurred in her 30s.

In the article, Hargitay revealed that she was raped by someone she considered a friend. She detailed her desperate attempts to escape the situation, including making jokes, setting boundaries, and saying no. However, her assailant held her down, leaving her terrified and unable to escape. Hargitay described going into “freeze mode,” a common trauma response when there is no option to escape, and checking out of her body.

After the assault, Hargitay tried to erase the incident from her narrative and forget about it. However, the experience deeply impacted her and motivated her to found the Joyful Heart Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping sexual assault survivors. The foundation aims to support survivors and promote healing and empowerment.

Hargitay’s portrayal of Detective Olivia Benson on “Law & Order: SVU” has also played a significant role in raising awareness about sexual assault. Her character is constantly striving to catch predators and seek justice for victims of this nature.

Numerous advocacy groups have praised Hargitay for sharing her experience and breaking the stigma surrounding sexual assault. Organizations such as the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, and the New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault have expressed their appreciation for Hargitay’s bravery and the positive impact she is making.

Scott Berkowitz, the president of RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), commended Hargitay for her ongoing efforts to support survivors through her career and foundation. He emphasized the importance of survivors, like Hargitay, sharing their stories and encouraged others to follow in her footsteps.

By sharing her personal story, Hargitay is shedding light on the experiences of countless other survivors. Her courage and willingness to discuss such a traumatic event encourages others to speak up and seek support. It also helps to dismantle the barriers that victims often face when coming forward and discussing their experiences.
