LSU RB Trey Holly arrested, charged with attempted murder

LSU running back Trey Holly was recently arrested and charged with second-degree attempted murder in connection to a shooting at a Louisiana apartment complex. The incident left two people injured and has shocked the LSU community.

The 19-year-old freshman turned himself in on Thursday and is currently being held on a $512,000 bond. In addition to the attempted murder charge, Holly also faces one count of aggravated criminal damage to property and one count of illegal use of a weapon on a public roadway.

Kelvin Rodgers, one of Holly’s attorneys, has stated that his client plans to plead not guilty to all three charges. Rodgers told The Advocate, “Mr. Holly emphatically denies all charges, and we look forward to having our day in court.”

The injured individuals in the shooting were bystanders, according to the Union Parish Sheriff’s Office. The incident has raised concerns about public safety and the need for stricter gun control measures.

In response to the arrest, LSU has suspended Holly indefinitely from all team activities. The university released a statement saying, “We are aware that a student-athlete has been arrested in relation to a shooting in Union Parish. This student-athlete has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities, in accordance with departmental policies. Out of respect for the judicial process, we will have no further comment.”

Holly, who stands at 5-foot-7 and weighs 192 pounds, had a promising start to his college football career. In the 2023 season, he recorded 11 carries for 110 yards and a touchdown for the Tigers. He also holds Louisiana’s all-time rushing record with an impressive 10,523 yards.

This shocking incident has not only tarnished Holly’s reputation but has also raised concerns about the safety of student-athletes and the need for stricter background checks. It serves as a reminder that athletes, regardless of their talent and potential, are not exempt from the law.

Two other individuals, including a 17-year-old minor, were also arrested in connection with the shooting. The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge as the case progresses.

LSU had a successful 2023 season, finishing second in the SEC West and defeating Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl. However, this unfortunate incident involving Holly has cast a shadow over the team and serves as a reminder that off-field behavior can have severe consequences.

As the legal process unfolds, it is crucial to remember that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Holly’s case will undoubtedly attract significant attention, and it remains to be seen how it will impact his future in football and at LSU.
