It didn’t take long to name Bill Belichick’s successor

Jerod Mayo Named Head Coach of the New England Patriots

In a surprising move, Jerod Mayo has been named the head coach of the New England Patriots. This comes just a day after the organization announced that they were parting ways with long-time head coach Bill Belichick. Mayo, who has long been favored to eventually replace Belichick, will now take on the challenge of leading one of the most successful franchises in NFL history.

At just 37 years old, Mayo will become the NFL’s youngest active head coach. His appointment also marks an important milestone as he becomes the first Black head coach in the history of the New England Patriots. He joins a small group of only five Black head coaches in the league.

Mayo’s journey to the head coaching position has been a remarkable one. He was drafted by the Patriots in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft and quickly made an impact. In his rookie season, Mayo won the Defensive Rookie of the Year award and went on to play a key role in the team’s success, including two Super Bowl victories.

During his eight seasons as a player in New England, Mayo recorded an impressive 905 tackles and was selected to two Pro Bowls. After retiring from playing, Mayo joined Belichick’s coaching staff in 2019 and quickly established himself as a strong candidate to eventually take over as head coach.

The Patriots’ decision to hire Mayo as head coach was not entirely unexpected. Last offseason, Mayo signed a contract extension that included a succession plan, allowing the team to bypass the standard hiring process and immediately promote him to the top coaching position. This move demonstrates the organization’s confidence in Mayo’s abilities and their belief that he is the right person to lead the team into the future.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft has previously expressed his support for Mayo as a potential successor to Belichick. In an interview with NFL Network earlier this year, Kraft stated that Mayo was “definitely a strong candidate” for the position.

While Mayo’s appointment as head coach is undoubtedly exciting for Patriots fans, there was some speculation that the team could have pursued other options, such as former player Mike Vrabel, who was recently fired by the Tennessee Titans. Ultimately, the organization decided to place their trust in Mayo and give him the opportunity to prove himself as a head coach.

As the 15th head coach in the franchise’s history, Mayo will face high expectations and the pressure to continue the Patriots’ winning tradition. However, with his experience as both a player and coach in New England, as well as his strong leadership qualities, Mayo appears to be well-equipped for the challenge.

Only time will tell how Mayo will fare in his new role, but one thing is certain – the New England Patriots have made a bold and potentially game-changing decision in appointing Jerod Mayo as their head coach.
