New findings in NCAA sanctions against Alabama and former head baseball coach Brad Bohannon have revealed a shocking revelation. According to ESPN, Bohannon knowingly provided insider information to a gambler who bet against the Crimson Tide last spring.
Bohannon, who was fired in May, failed to participate in the NCAA’s investigation into suspicious betting. As a result, he has received a 15-year show-cause order. This means that if a school in the NCAA hires Bohannon, they must suspend him for the first five seasons of his employment.
The NCAA announced that Bohannon violated wagering and ethical conduct rules during an incident in the Alabama-LSU game. It was discovered that Bohannon messaged someone betting on the game, informing them that a key student-athlete would be out. The bettor, identified as Bert Eugene Neff, tried to place a $100,000 bet on the game but was capped at $15,000 by the staff.
Alabama, in addition to Bohannon’s sanctions, received three years of probation and a $5,000 fine. They are now required to retain a firm to provide comprehensive gambling education to Crimson Tide student-athletes, coaches, and athletic department administrators.
Neff, the suspected bettor, pled guilty to federal obstruction charges. He admitted to passing the insider information along to at least four other gamblers. Neff is facing up to 10 years in prison and can be fined up to $250,000 for his actions.
The NCAA takes the integrity of games very seriously, and Bohannon’s unethical behavior has deeply troubled officials. Vince Nicastro, the deputy commissioner and chief operating officer of the Big East, stated, “Improperly sharing information for purposes of sports betting cuts to the heart of the honesty and sportsmanship we expect of our members and is particularly egregious when shared by those who have the ability to influence the outcome of games.”
In a separate development, Bohannon was also recently banned from Ohio sportsbooks on November 15. The consequences of his actions continue to mount, and it remains to be seen how this scandal will impact his future in the world of college baseball.
