WTA roundup: Laura Samson, 16, reaches Prague semis


The tennis world is abuzz with excitement as young talents continue to make a name for themselves on the WTA tour. At the Livesport Prague Open, 16-year-old Czech wild card Laura Samson shocked the tennis world by reaching the semifinals with a gritty 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Russia’s Oksana Selekhmeteva.

Samson, a former junior No. 1, is competing in her first WTA tournament and has already made a significant impact. In a match that lasted 2 hours and 41 minutes, Samson showed incredible resilience and determination to come from behind and secure the win. She will now face No. 6 seed Magdalena Frech of Poland in the semis, who also staged a comeback victory against No. 3 seed Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine.

The other semifinal at the Livesport Prague Open will see top-seeded Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic take on No. 4 seed Magda Linette of Poland. Noskova, who defeated Germany’s Ella Seidel in straight sets, will be looking to continue her impressive run in the tournament. Linette, on the other hand, had to battle hard to overcome No. 5 seed Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria in a thrilling three-set match.

Meanwhile, at the UniCredit Iasi Open in Romania, top-seeded Mirra Andreeva of Russia showcased her dominance with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 victory over Croatia’s Lea Boskovic. Andreeva, just 17 years old, put on a masterclass performance, never facing a break point and converting five of her six break chances. She will now face Serbia’s Olga Danilovic in the semifinals, who caused an upset by defeating No. 8 seed Anna Bondar of Hungary.

In another exciting development, unseeded Chloe Paquet staged a remarkable comeback to reach the WTA 25 clay-court semifinals with a 0-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over French compatriot Selena Janicijevic. Paquet will now await the winner between No. 3 seed Jaqueline Cristian of Romania and No. 5 seed Elina Avanesyan of Russia.
