The New York Yankees held a moment of silence prior to Monday’s game for Rachel Minaya, wife of team executive Omar Minaya, who tragically passed away over the weekend at the age of 55. Rachel was found dead in the New Jersey home she shared with Omar, though he was not at home at the time of the incident.
While a cause of death has not been revealed, it has been reported that suicide has been ruled out. The Minayas, who have two adult sons named Justin and Teddy, were married for over 30 years.
The Yankees paid tribute to Rachel Minaya in a heartfelt statement released on Monday. The statement described Rachel as a loving and compassionate mother and wife who was a huge supporter of her family and loved ones. The team expressed their deep condolences to Omar, his sons, and their family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
Omar Minaya, a senior adviser to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, has been a beloved member of the Yankees organization since he began his post in 2023. Prior to joining the Yankees, Minaya served as the general manager of the New York Mets from 2004-2010 and later as a special assistant with the Mets from 2017-2020. He was also the general manager of the Montreal Expos from 2002-2004 before the franchise moved to Washington.
Mets owner Steve Cohen and his wife Alex also offered their condolences to the Minaya family in a statement released on Monday. The couple expressed their sadness over Rachel Minaya’s passing and extended their deepest sympathies to Omar’s entire family and loved ones.
The baseball community has come together to mourn the loss of Rachel Minaya and to support the Minaya family during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with Omar, Justin, Teddy, and all those who knew and loved Rachel.
