The Minnesota Twins made a roster move on Friday, recalling right-hander Josh Winder from Triple-A St. Paul. In a corresponding move, the Twins optioned rookie right-hander David Festa to the Saints.
Winder, 27, has had a solid season in Triple-A, posting a 2-0 record with a 4.78 ERA, eight walks, and 28 strikeouts over 26 1/3 innings in 15 games. The Twins are hoping that Winder can provide some solid innings out of the bullpen as they push for a playoff spot.
The Twins selected Winder in the seventh round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of Virginia Military Institute. He made his major league debut in 2022 and has compiled a 6-7 record with one save, a 4.51 ERA, 32 walks, and 75 strikeouts in 34 games (11 starts) over parts of the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
On the other hand, Festa, 24, made his major league debut on June 27 and struggled in his two starts, posting a 1-1 record with a 10.80 ERA, one walk, and eight strikeouts over 10 innings. The Twins decided to send him back to Triple-A to continue his development.
Overall, the Twins are looking to bolster their pitching staff as they make a push for the postseason. Winder’s experience and success in Triple-A make him a valuable addition to the bullpen, while Festa will have the opportunity to work on his game and hopefully make a return to the majors in the future.
It will be interesting to see how Winder performs in his return to the big leagues and how Festa progresses in Triple-A. The Twins will be hoping that these moves help strengthen their pitching staff and lead them to success down the stretch.
