Thank god for Spain holding Luis Rubiales accountable

Former Spanish Football Federation head, Luis Rubiales, is facing potential criminal charges and jail time after planting an unwanted kiss on Jenni Hermoso’s lips following Spain’s victory in the 2023 World Cup. A judge who presided over the inquiry into the incident has recommended that Rubiales stand trial for sexual assault and coercion, with a potential sentence ranging from a fine to four years in prison. The judge described the kiss as “not consensual” and a “unilateral and surprising initiative.” The judge also recommended that three other men, Jorge Vilda, Rubén Rivera, and Albert Luque, stand trial for pressuring Hermoso to publicly state that the kiss was consensual.

Spain has a progressive stance on gender equality, with 47% of its Congress identifying as female and the introduction of legislation to ensure safe and accessible abortions and menstrual leave for its female citizens. Given this context, it is not surprising that Rubiales could face legal consequences for his actions.

Rubiales and the other men involved in the inquiry, including former head coach Jorge Vilda, have failed to understand the gravity of their actions. Vilda, who was removed from his position in September, has been accused of exerting control over players’ personal lives, including asking about their interactions and inspecting their shopping bags. Despite their misconduct, these men seem to believe that they are the victims in this situation.

The incident involving Rubiales serves as a metaphor for the challenges women face in society. No matter how successful or accomplished a woman is, she is still subject to the sexual whims of men in power. Some may argue that Rubiales was simply expressing happiness, but consent is paramount, and no level of happiness justifies kissing someone without their consent.

The unfortunate reality is that, despite the historic achievements of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, Rubiales’ assault is the moment that continues to be discussed. This diminishes the accomplishments of the Spanish team and sends a message to young girls that men in power can exert control over women even on the world’s biggest stage.

It is disheartening to witness the prevalence of casual sexism in both private and professional lives. Rubiales represents men who believe they are entitled to touch women without their consent, treating their consent as optional. It is crucial for men to understand the importance of consent and to respect women’s boundaries.

In order to avoid situations like Rubiales’, it is important to establish boundaries and seek consent when interacting with women. This includes refraining from touching anyone without asking and not forcing physical affection on children. Claiming cultural differences or using the excuse of being European does not justify inappropriate behavior. Opting for handshakes, fist bumps, or high fives is a safe choice until receiving explicit consent.

Furthermore, it is essential to maintain appropriate boundaries in professional settings. No woman wants to fend off advances while trying to focus on her work. Treating women with the same respect as men is crucial until they indicate otherwise.

Some may argue that women want equality but also expect special treatment. However, the reality is that women desire equal treatment and respect, not special treatment. It is important for men to reflect on their behavior and ensure they are not crossing boundaries or making women uncomfortable.

Rubiales must face trial and be held accountable for his actions. It is important for him to answer for his behavior in front of the entire world, especially in the presence of women. This trial serves as a reminder that no one, regardless of their position or achievements, is above the law or exempt from consequences for their actions.
