Sad News For Baldur’s Gate 3 Fans: Larian Studios Ends Downloadable Content, Sequel Plans; Moves Beyond ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ – Hasbro (NASDAQ:HAS)

Larian Studios, the developer behind the highly anticipated Baldur’s Gate 3, has announced that the game will not receive any expansions or downloadable content (DLC). This surprising revelation came during a Game Developers Conference panel, where Swen Vincke, the founder of Larian Studios, shared the news.

Instead of continuing to expand on Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios is moving away from the Dungeons & Dragons universe and handing over the Baldur’s Gate IP to Wizards of the Coast. This decision marks a significant shift in direction for the studio, known for its commitment to the RPG genre with titles like the Divinity: Original Sin series.

Fans who were eagerly anticipating more content for Baldur’s Gate 3 may be disappointed by this news. Despite previous discussions about potential DLCs, Larian has decided to focus on other projects once current patches are completed. The company’s senior product manager, Tom Butler, mentioned last year that they would take a break after patching and then figure out their next steps.

The fate of Baldur’s Gate 4 remains uncertain, as Hasbro Inc’s Wizards of the Coast may seek another developer for the project. However, Baldur’s Gate 3 has enjoyed tremendous success, both commercially and critically, with accolades and high scores from reviewers.

While fans may be disappointed by the lack of expansions for Baldur’s Gate 3, they can still enjoy the game’s existing content and look forward to what Larian Studios has in store for the future. It will be interesting to see what new projects the studio will tackle next, and whether they will continue to push the boundaries of the RPG genre.
