‘Rust’ Assistant Director Gives Emotional Testimony During Armorer Trial

The trial surrounding the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film “Rust” continues to unfold, with emotional testimonies and conflicting accounts painting a complex picture of what led to the fatal shooting.

One of the key witnesses in the trial is David Halls, the first assistant director on the set, who handed Alec Baldwin the gun that ultimately fired the fatal shot. In his testimony, Halls recounted his last interaction with Halyna before she died, revealing that she told him she couldn’t feel her legs before passing away. The emotional testimony brought tears to Halls’ eyes and highlighted the devastating impact of the tragedy.

Prosecutors in the trial are focusing on armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who is facing manslaughter charges for her role in the incident. They allege that she failed to follow proper gun safety protocols on set, leaving guns and live ammo unattended and allowing a live round to be loaded into the gun that Baldwin fired.

Testimonies from a producer on the film, Ryan Winterstern, and line producer Gabrielle Pickle have further implicated Gutierrez-Reed in the tragedy. Winterstern testified that he did not recall Gutierrez-Reed raising concerns about Baldwin’s cross draw technique, despite her claims that she had discussed it with him.

Pickle, on the other hand, testified that she had raised concerns with Gutierrez-Reed about firearms being left unattended on set and proposed a logging system to track the guns. Gutierrez-Reed allegedly rejected the suggestion, claiming it was too complicated and insisting on using her own system.

The prosecution has argued that Gutierrez-Reed bears responsibility for the fatal shooting due to her negligence and failure to ensure proper gun safety measures on set. Gutierrez-Reed’s defense, however, has claimed that she was overwhelmed with multiple roles on set at just 24 years old and is being unfairly scapegoated for the tragedy.

As the trial continues to unfold, the emotional testimonies and conflicting accounts serve as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of negligence and lack of proper safety measures on film sets. The outcome of the trial will not only bring justice for the tragic loss of Halyna Hutchins but also potentially set a precedent for ensuring the safety of cast and crew on future film productions.
