Ron DeSantis Slams Colorado’s Legal Weed Program, Says It’s Fueling Black Market

Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor and potential 2024 GOP presidential nominee, is making waves with his strong stance against drugs and his involvement in the culture wars that are gripping the United States. As he continues to position himself as a warrior against drugs, DeSantis is pulling out all the stops to attract voters.

In a recent interview on Iowa’s morning radio network “The Big Show on KCPS,” DeSantis criticized Colorado’s legal marijuana program for its alleged failure to eliminate the black market. He argued that the legalization of marijuana in Colorado has actually led to a bigger black market. However, Colorado did not take this criticism lying down.

A spokesperson for Colorado Governor Jared Polis’ office issued a statement countering DeSantis’ claim. They pointed out that Colorado voters approved the legalization of marijuana, which has resulted in a reduction in the illicit market, the removal of dealers from the streets, a decrease in youth use, and funding for school construction. They also highlighted the positive impact on jobs and Colorado’s economy. The spokesperson even offered to provide advice to the Florida governor on how to increase economic and personal freedom, citing Colorado as a successful example.

DeSantis’ assertion contradicts data collected by Leafly and Whitney Economics, which found that 99% of recreational marijuana sales in Colorado now take place through licensed retailers. This data suggests that Colorado has successfully transitioned to a legal market since legalizing adult-use cannabis in 2012.

Despite the evidence and the success of Colorado’s legal marijuana market, DeSantis remains a staunch opponent of marijuana reform, both in Florida and on the national stage. He has questioned the legitimacy of Florida’s medical marijuana program, suggesting that some patients are using their conditions as an excuse to get high.

However, Florida voters seem to have a different opinion. According to a recent poll, nearly 70% of Florida’s voters support the upcoming legalization initiative, which is expected to be decided at the ballot box in 2024. This indicates a strong desire among the public to legalize marijuana in the state.

Ron DeSantis’ views on marijuana legalization are not aligned with the majority of Florida voters. While he continues to position himself as a warrior against drugs, his stance clashes with the evidence and the will of the people. As the 2024 election approaches, it will be interesting to see how his stance on this issue resonates with voters and whether it will impact his chances of becoming the GOP presidential nominee.
