In a surprising turn of events, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has officially requested a trade from the team. This news comes after negotiations for a contract extension fell through, as reported by NFL Network. Aiyuk’s desire to leave the 49ers has thrown his future with the team into uncertainty.
The timing of Aiyuk’s trade request is particularly notable, coming just one week before the 49ers are set to open their training camp. The wide receiver notably did not participate in the team’s offseason program and also skipped mandatory minicamp, signaling his discontent with the situation.
At 26 years old, Aiyuk is currently set to earn $14.1 million in 2024 to complete his rookie deal. However, reports indicate that he is seeking a substantial extension, with figures potentially reaching $30 million annually. This stark difference in contract expectations between Aiyuk and the 49ers has led to the current standoff.
Aiyuk’s on-field performance in the previous season is likely a factor behind his desire for a lucrative extension. The uncertainty surrounding Aiyuk’s future adds a layer of intrigue to the upcoming NFL season and will undoubtedly be a storyline to watch as the situation develops.
