Reds activate OF Stuart Fairchild, DFA Edwin Rios

The Cincinnati Reds made a roster move on Friday, activating outfielder Stuart Fairchild from the 10-day injured list. In a corresponding move, the team designated veteran infielder Edwin Rios for assignment to make room on the active roster.

Fairchild, 28, had been sidelined since July 6 with a spine-disc injury. Prior to the injury, he was having a solid season, batting .224 with five home runs, 23 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases through 72 games. His return to the lineup will provide a boost to the Reds as they look to make a push in the second half of the season.

Rios, 30, appeared in just five games for Cincinnati, going 1-for-9 at the plate with four strikeouts. The decision to designate him for assignment was likely a difficult one for the team, but with Fairchild’s return, they needed to free up a roster spot.

Overall, this move is a positive one for the Reds as they get a key player back from injury. Fairchild’s presence in the lineup should provide a spark for the team as they continue their push for a playoff spot in the competitive National League Central division.
