Rays, minus Randy Arozarena, open series with Reds

The MLB trade deadline is fast approaching, and the Tampa Bay Rays are making moves. In a deal late Thursday night, the Rays traded former All-Star outfielder Randy Arozarena to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for two minor league prospects and a player to be announced. This move comes as a surprise to many, as the Rays are just four games out of a playoff position.

On the other side, the Cincinnati Reds are also in the playoff hunt, sitting 4 1/2 games behind the final National League wild-card spot. After a rough stretch of games, the Reds bounced back with wins against the Atlanta Braves this week. The upcoming series against the Rays could determine whether the Reds will be buyers or sellers ahead of the trade deadline.

Both teams are feeling the pressure to perform well in this crucial series. Cincinnati outfielder Spencer Steer emphasized the importance of stringing together good games and staying consistent to make a push for the playoffs. Reds starting pitcher Frankie Montas echoed this sentiment, stressing the need to stay focused on the task at hand.

Despite their recent success, the Rays decided to part ways with Arozarena, who has been performing well at the plate. In a high-scoring game against the Toronto Blue Jays, Brandon Lowe and Amed Rosario led the Rays to a 13-0 victory, marking a season high in runs scored.

In the upcoming opener against the Reds, Rays right-hander Shane Baz will take the mound. Baz, who is returning from Tommy John surgery, is looking to bounce back after a rough outing against the Yankees. On the other side, the Reds will send left-hander Nick Lodolo to the hill, who has struggled in his last few starts.

The Rays are also dealing with the absence of first baseman Yandy Diaz, who has been away from the team since the All-Star break due to a family matter. Manager Kevin Cash stated that there is no timetable for Diaz’s return, leaving the team to rely on Isaac Paredes at first base in the meantime.

As both teams gear up for this important series, the stakes are high. The outcome of these games could have a significant impact on each team’s approach to the trade deadline and their playoff aspirations. Fans can expect an intense and competitive series between the Rays and Reds as they battle it out on the diamond.
