Pirates acquire LHP Josh Walker from Mets

The Pittsburgh Pirates made a move to bolster their pitching depth on Tuesday, acquiring left-hander Josh Walker from the New York Mets in exchange for minor league southpaw Nicolas Carreno.

Walker, who is 29 years old, had been designated for assignment by the Mets last week after struggling to a 5.11 ERA in 10 relief appearances. The Pirates see potential in the veteran hurler and have assigned him to Triple-A Indianapolis as he looks to work his way back to the majors.

A former 37th-round draft pick in 2017, Walker made his MLB debut with the Mets in 2023. In his brief big league career, he has compiled a record of 0-1 with a 6.45 ERA in 24 games, all in relief.

On the other side of the deal, the Mets receive Carreno, an 18-year-old pitching prospect who signed with the Pirates out of Venezuela last year. Carreno has shown promise in the Dominican Summer League this season, posting a 0-1 record with a 3.74 ERA in eight starts.

Both teams will be hoping that this trade works out in their favor, with the Pirates looking to add depth to their pitching staff and the Mets potentially finding a young arm with upside in Carreno. Only time will tell how this deal ultimately plays out for both clubs.
