No Netflix App On Apple Vision Pro, Streaming Giant Says You Can Watch Content This Way Instead – Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)

Apple’s highly anticipated Vision Pro mixed-reality headset is set to launch soon, but it will be missing a key streaming app: Netflix. This absence could be a significant setback for Apple, as it has been heavily promoting entertainment content for the new device.

According to a Bloomberg report, Netflix has decided against developing an app specifically for the Vision Pro. Instead, the streaming giant has suggested that users watch its programming via the web browser on the headset. Netflix stated, “Our members will be able to enjoy Netflix on the web browser on the Vision Pro, similar to how our members can enjoy Netflix on Macs.”

The lack of a Netflix app on the Vision Pro, which is set to debut on February 2nd and cost $3,499, could have a significant impact on Apple. The company has been leveraging entertainment content to market the Vision Pro, and a Netflix streaming service is considered a must-have for many consumers.

Apple had designed the Vision Pro to run two types of apps: new software developed specifically for the device’s interface and current iPad applications. Netflix’s decision not to support even the iPad approach highlights the streaming giant’s cautious approach to the new technology.

This lack of a Netflix app complicates accessing its content on the Vision Pro, making offline content download and custom environments for streaming impossible. Surprisingly, Netflix did create an app for Meta Platforms Inc.’s Quest headsets, but it has not been updated in years.

Apple’s Vision Pro, the company’s first-generation mixed-reality headset, has been a highly anticipated product among investors and tech enthusiasts. Apple’s focus on entertainment content was emphasized through its announcement of exclusive, immersive originals from renowned creators like Jon Favreau and Alicia Keys. These originals will be featured on the Apple TV app integrated into Vision Pro at no additional cost from the release date.

The Cupertino-based company previously announced that the headset will offer a variety of entertainment options beyond its Apple TV+ service. This includes content from Disney+, Max, Peacock, ESPN, and Amazon Prime Video, among other platforms.

While the lack of a Netflix app is undoubtedly a setback for Apple, it remains to be seen how it will impact the success of the Vision Pro. With its emphasis on entertainment content and a lineup of exclusive originals, Apple is betting on the appeal of its own offerings to attract consumers to its mixed-reality headset.
