The Washington Nationals have made the decision to release third baseman/outfielder Nick Senzel, just five days after designating him for assignment. This move comes after Senzel struggled to find his groove with the team, batting only .209 with seven home runs and 18 RBIs in 64 games.
Senzel’s time with the Nationals got off to a rocky start when he fractured his right thumb during batting practice prior to the season-opening game against the Cincinnati Reds. Despite making his season debut on April 15, Senzel never seemed to fully recover from the injury, slugging just .359 throughout his time with the team.
The 29-year-old spent his first five big league seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, where he was drafted as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 draft. In his career, Senzel has a .235 batting average with 40 home runs and 143 RBIs in 441 games.
It’s clear that Senzel’s time with the Nationals did not pan out as expected, leading to his release from the team. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the talented player, but this move marks the end of his tenure in Washington.
