Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of social media giants Facebook and Instagram, is facing yet another controversy surrounding content moderation. An employee at Meta has accused the company of putting her under investigation after she complained about the alleged censorship of pro-Palestinian content on the platforms.
The employee, a data scientist based in Meta’s New York office, took to Instagram to voice her concerns. In a video, she stated that she had rallied support from 450 colleagues for a letter urging management to recognize the loss of Palestinian lives and provide support for Palestinian colleagues in the aftermath of the Israel-Hamas conflict. The letter also reportedly demanded transparency in handling internal and external censorship across Meta’s platforms.
However, the employee claims that Meta promptly removed the letter from its internal forum and revoked her access to the company’s systems, citing its non-political workplace policies. The incident has sparked a public dispute and raised questions about Meta’s commitment to free speech and content moderation.
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone refrained from commenting on the specifics of the case, calling it a “personnel matter.” Nevertheless, he reiterated the company’s dedication to fostering a respectful and inclusive work environment. Stone emphasized that Meta has updated its employee expectations to maintain a productive and respectful workplace. He acknowledged that this may limit certain forms of expression but stated that it is necessary for the long-term health of the company’s internal community.
This incident comes at a time when Meta is already facing scrutiny over content moderation practices and allegations of systematic censorship of Palestinian content. Last year, Instagram faced backlash after a translation error incorrectly labeled certain Palestinian user profiles as “terrorist.” In December, Senator Elizabeth Warren wrote a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, seeking transparency on the company’s content moderation practices related to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The reported investigation of a Meta employee adds another layer to the ongoing debate about content moderation and free speech within the social media giant.
