Marjorie Taylor Greene Alleges GOP Members Were Bribed to Vote Against Impeachment
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has made headlines once again with her controversial statements, this time alleging that members of her own party may have been bribed to vote against the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Greene made these claims during an interview with right-wing podcast host Charlie Kirk.
The impeachment vote took place on Tuesday and ended in failure, leading Greene to express her disappointment about the outcome. In her conversation with Kirk, she did not dismiss the possibility that Representative Ken Buck (R-Colo.), Representative Tom McClintock (R-Calif.), and Representative Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) were “being bribed.”
Kirk asked Greene if she thought these individuals were being blackmailed by intelligence agencies, suggesting that compromising pictures or relationships could be used as leverage. While Greene admitted she had no proof of such activities, she couldn’t understand why anyone would vote against the impeachment and speculated that there must be some ulterior motive, such as bribery or deals being made.
Greene also expressed skepticism about Buck’s retirement plans, suggesting that he may be seeking a role with CNN. She also questioned McClintock’s credentials as a “constitutionalist.” As for Gallagher, despite his military intelligence qualifications, she expressed confusion over his vote.
However, it’s important to note that the Republicans who voted against the impeachment have been transparent about their reasons. Gallagher explained his opposition in a Wall Street Journal op-ed, stating that the impeachment would set a dangerous precedent. McClintock also defended his vote, emphasizing that the impeachment would not serve its intended purpose.
This is not the first time Greene has made headlines for her controversial statements and actions. Just earlier this week, a Democratic congressman accused her of “running the circus” in Congress due to her attempts to impeach Mayorkas and censure Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.). Greene has faced criticism for what some perceive as a focus on revenge, retaliation, and impeachment rather than addressing important issues.
The Biden administration has criticized the Republican effort to impeach Mayorkas as an unprecedented and unconstitutional political maneuver. They argue that this move undermines the genuine challenge of securing the southern U.S. border.
In another recent incident, Greene stormed out of a House Oversight hearing after being confronted about her support for the January 6 Capitol rioters. Representative Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) pointed out the irony of Greene expressing concern about crime in Washington, D.C., while showing support for the insurrectionists who attacked the Capitol.
Marjorie Taylor Greene’s recent comments continue to fuel controversy and draw attention to her actions in Congress. While she may have her own reasons for making these allegations, it remains to be seen if any evidence will emerge to support her claims of bribery or blackmail within the GOP.
