Jay-Z Calls Out Grammy Awards For Not Recognizing Beyoncé’s Album Of The Year

Jay-Z Criticizes Recording Academy for Failing to Recognize Beyoncé at Grammy Awards

Shawn Corey Carter, better known as Jay-Z, used his acceptance speech at the 66th Grammy Awards to criticize the Recording Academy for failing to recognize his wife, Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter, with the Album of the Year award. The artist was awarded the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award at the Grammy Awards 2024 and took the opportunity to address the ongoing issues within the Recording Academy.

During his speech, Jay-Z mentioned past instances of boycotts and snubs within the industry. He reminisced about the 1989 Grammy Awards when Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff boycotted the event because it wasn’t televised. He also mentioned his own boycott in 1998 when he was nominated for Best Rap Album but felt that DMX should have been recognized for his chart-topping rap albums that year.

Jay-Z then highlighted Beyoncé’s remarkable achievements, including her record-breaking 32 Grammy wins and 88 nominations. Despite her success, Beyoncé has never won the Album of the Year award. He expressed his disappointment, saying, “I’m just saying, we want you all to get it right. We love y’all, we love y’all, we love y’all—we want y’all to get it right, at least get it close to right. And obviously, it’s subjective … because it’s music and it’s opinion-based, but some things you know, I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won album of the year.”

The Global Impact Award, which Jay-Z received, is an accolade exclusively designated for Black music creators. It is bestowed in acknowledgment of their “dedication to the art form that has greatly influenced the industry.” In recent years, the award has been given to John Legend, Dr. Dre, Missy Elliott, Lil Wayne, and music executive Sylvia Rhone. This year, Jay-Z joins previously disclosed honorees Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey in being honored with the award.

Jay-Z’s criticism of the Recording Academy highlights the ongoing conversation surrounding the lack of diversity and representation within the music industry. Many artists and fans have expressed frustration with the Grammy Awards and other award shows for not adequately recognizing the achievements of artists of color.

While the Grammy Awards have made efforts to address these issues in recent years, such as expanding the number of nominees in major categories and diversifying the voting membership, there is still work to be done to ensure equal recognition for all artists. Jay-Z’s speech serves as a reminder that there is a need for continued progress and inclusivity within the music industry.

As the industry evolves and becomes more diverse, it is crucial for organizations like the Recording Academy to listen to the concerns of artists and fans and strive for fair and inclusive recognition. The Grammy Awards and other award shows have the power to shape the narrative of music history, and it is essential that they accurately reflect the contributions and impact of artists from all backgrounds.

In conclusion, Jay-Z’s criticism of the Recording Academy at the Grammy Awards sheds light on the ongoing issues of representation and recognition within the music industry. His speech serves as a call to action for organizations to address these concerns and strive for a more inclusive and diverse future.
