Jackie Robinson Statue Fundraiser Tops $175k

The youth baseball league, League 42, in Wichita, Kansas recently faced a devastating incident when their beloved Jackie Robinson statue was stolen and destroyed. However, thanks to an overwhelming show of support, the league has received over $175,000 in donations to replace the tribute.

The bronze figure of the baseball legend was taken from outside the League 42 facility and was later discovered wrecked beyond repair in a trash can fire at a nearby park. This act of vandalism left the league and its community heartbroken.

In response to the incident, a GoFundMe campaign was set up to help replace the Robinson statue. Initially, the campaign aimed to raise $75,000, the estimated value of the statue, but it has since exceeded its goal. The outpouring of support from donors has not only provided enough funds to replace the tribute but has also given the league the opportunity to address other needs.

League 42 has decided to keep the fundraiser active, as the additional money raised can be used to support the organization’s various programs. This includes funding education programs and revamping several fields that require new lighting and artificial turf. The league’s annual budget has now risen to $400,000, which will benefit young kids who want to learn and play the sport without the burden of high entry fees.

The organization expressed its gratitude for the overwhelming support, stating, “What people are doing and have done to support League 42 makes all of us — our families, board members, staff, and players — grateful beyond words.” The kindness and generosity from the community have touched the hearts of everyone involved in the league.

While the stolen statue has yet to be recovered, local authorities are actively investigating the incident. The league and the community are hopeful that the culprits will be brought to justice and that this senseless act of vandalism will not overshadow the remarkable support they have received.

In the face of adversity, League 42 and its community have demonstrated resilience and unity. The incident has highlighted the importance of preserving the legacy of Jackie Robinson and the values he represented. It is through the collective effort of individuals and communities that the spirit of the game can prevail, inspiring future generations to embrace the sport and its timeless values.
