Senator Tommy Tuberville, a Republican from Alabama, recently expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of the U.S. military under the leadership of President Joe Biden. In an interview with Newsmax’s Eric Bolling, Tuberville described the U.S. army as the weakest he has seen in his lifetime and blamed the Biden administration’s policies for the decline.
One of the issues Tuberville took issue with was the Pentagon’s request for $114 million for its diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) programs for the fiscal year 2024. He also mentioned the now-revoked COVID-19 vaccine mandate for active service members as a contributing factor to the military’s current state.
“$114 million on diversity training, you’ve got to be kidding me,” Tuberville said during the interview. “We’ve got the weakest military that we’ve had in probably my lifetime.”
Tuberville went on to criticize what he referred to as “wokeness” infiltrating the military, blaming it on President Biden, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, and former Joint Chiefs Chair General Mark Milley. He claimed that the military is struggling to recruit new members and is begging former service members who left due to vaccine mandates to come back. Tuberville believes that the country is in huge trouble as a result.
However, Tuberville’s remarks have been met with criticism. Critics, including former U.S. Army lieutenant colonel Alexander Vindman and former Republican congressman and Air Force veteran Adam Kinzinger, have condemned Tuberville’s assertions. Vindman posted on X, stating, “I agree with you Tuberville. The U.S. military is weakened. But not by ‘wokeness,’ it is weakened by your attacks, obstruction of military promotions, and your serving our enemy’s interests.”
It’s important to note that Tuberville, despite being a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has never served in the military himself. He is currently delaying hundreds of military nominations and promotions in protest against a Pentagon policy that reimburses travel expenses for service members seeking abortions. This policy came into effect after the Supreme Court reversed Roe vs. Wade in June 2022.
Other Democratic and Republican senators have also expressed their disapproval of Tuberville’s protest against military promotions over the abortion issue. Former Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger called Tuberville an “idiot” and stated that he doesn’t understand the absolute lethality of the U.S. military.
In conclusion, Senator Tommy Tuberville’s criticism of the current state of the U.S. military under the Biden administration has sparked controversy. While Tuberville claims that the military is weakened due to “wokeness” and the Biden administration’s policies, critics argue that his obstruction of military promotions and serving the enemy’s interests are the true causes of the military’s decline.
