Ex-Man U star Wayne Rooney’s next venture could be boxing

Wayne Rooney in Talks to Join Misfits Boxing Promotion

Former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is considering a career switch to the ring. The 38-year-old has reportedly held talks with a boxing promoter to participate in a Misfits Boxing promotion, according to ESPN.

Rooney, who was recently fired from his managerial role at Championship side Birmingham City, has a wealth of experience in football. He has played for top clubs like Manchester United and has also coached in both the English second-tier and the MLS. Now, he is exploring the possibility of stepping into the boxing ring.

Misfits Boxing is a crossover boxing promotion founded by YouTuber KSI in 2022. While the cards primarily feature online creators, they have also facilitated events for former athletes. In April 2023, former NFL running back Le’Veon Bell secured his first official boxing victory on a Misfits card, alongside former MMA fighter Chris Avila.

It’s important to note that Misfits Boxing operates outside the rules of the British Boxing Board of Control, meaning any fight Rooney participates in would not be considered a professional bout. Nevertheless, it could provide him with an opportunity to showcase his skills and passion for the sport.

Rooney would join a long list of athletes who have made the transition to boxing later in their careers. Former Premier League player Curtis Woodhouse, for example, won the British light welterweight title after switching from football. Katie Taylor, one of the greatest female lightweight boxers, transitioned from Gaelic football to become a full-time boxer. Even former Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Ed “Too Tall” Jones had a successful boxing career, going undefeated with a 6-0 record as a heavyweight. Additionally, former Houston Oilers running back Alonzo Highsmith retired from football in 1992 and went on to achieve a remarkable record of 27-1-2 in a three-year boxing career.

While it remains to be seen whether Rooney will officially step into the ring, his potential involvement with Misfits Boxing has already generated significant interest. Fans will be eagerly awaiting further updates on this intriguing career pivot for the football legend.
