Europe’s new Ryder Cup system still excludes LIV events

European Ryder Cup Team Excludes LIV Golf Tournaments from 2025 Qualification Process

The European Ryder Cup team is gearing up for the 2025 competition by streamlining its qualification process, but one notable exclusion from the roster spots is LIV Golf tournaments. The DP World Tour recently revealed details of the qualifying process, which will not include LIV Golf events as a method for earning points to make the squad.

The European team is moving away from a system where world rankings and the European points list carried the most weight in determining automatic qualifiers. LIV Golf participants do not qualify for world rankings points, leading to their exclusion from the qualification process.

European captain Luke Donald will have to select six wild cards to go along with six automatic qualifiers for the team, which will defend its Ryder Cup title against the United States from Sept. 26-28, 2025, at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.

“I am delighted to be able to confirm the details of the qualification process for our 2025 Ryder Cup team,” Donald said in a release. “A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes to get to this point, and everything is now focused on doing all we can to retain the trophy in New York next September.”

Europe’s year-long qualifying window opens with the British Masters from Aug. 29-Sept. 1. Points can be accrued on the DP World Tour and in select tournaments in the United States from Jan. 1-Aug. 17 of next year.

PGA European Tour chief executive Guy Kinnings expressed his satisfaction with the new qualification system, calling it “a much cleaner and simpler qualification system than the ones utilized in previous years.”

The 2023 European team, which won the Ryder Cup, was comprised of players who qualified through the European points list and world rankings. Notably, Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, who are LIV Golf members, were part of the winning team.

The final six wild-card selections made by Donald for the 2025 team include Tommy Fleetwood, Sepp Straka, Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, Nicolai Hojgaard, and Ludvig Aberg.

As the European Ryder Cup team looks ahead to the 2025 competition, the exclusion of LIV Golf tournaments from the qualification process is a strategic move that aims to streamline and simplify the selection of the team. The focus is now on preparing for the challenge of defending the Ryder Cup title against the United States in September 2025.
