The Detroit Lions have announced that they will be adding former wide receiver Calvin Johnson to the Pride of the Lions, which honors the greatest players in franchise history. Johnson will join the ranks of other Lions legends in a ceremony at halftime of their game on Sept. 30 against the Seattle Seahawks.
Calvin Johnson, also known as “Megatron,” played for the Lions from 2007 to 2015 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021. Despite some initial tension over financial issues following his retirement, Johnson and the Lions have since reconciled and now have a strong relationship.
Team president and CEO Rod Wood expressed his excitement about Johnson’s induction, stating, “His commitment on the field and to the city of Detroit are legendary, and this is a well-deserved honor. We are proud that he will be forever memorialized inside Ford Field and as a Detroit Lion.”
During his time with the Lions, Johnson made a significant impact on the field. He started 130 of 135 games played and holds the franchise records for receptions (731), receiving yards (11,619), and receiving touchdowns (83). Johnson was also named a first-team All-Pro for three consecutive seasons from 2011 to 2013 and was a member of the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team.
One of Johnson’s most memorable accomplishments came in 2012 when he set the NFL single-season receiving yardage record with 1,964 yards. His skill and dominance on the field solidified his place as one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history.
As Johnson takes his place among the other Lions greats in the Pride of the Lions, fans and players alike will have the opportunity to celebrate his remarkable career and lasting impact on the franchise. Congratulations to Calvin Johnson on this well-deserved honor.
