Dalton Knecht and Reed Sheppard could make NBA Draft history

The 2022 NBA Draft has been labeled as one of the weakest drafts in recent history, lacking a consensus top pick or standout talent. Teams like the Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs, Washington Wizards, and Portland Trail Blazers are all vying to see who can most egregiously throw away a season in hopes of landing a top prospect. However, amidst the lackluster draft class, there is one storyline that has gone overlooked – the potential of two white American players being selected in the top five for the first time in 50 years.

If Dalton Knecht and Reed Sheppard are indeed selected in the top five, it would mark the first time since 1974 that two white Americans have been taken in the first five selections. Knecht and Sheppard are currently ranked as the fourth and fifth-best prospects in the draft class, respectively. Knecht, a 6-foot-6 guard out of Fargo, North Dakota, has seen his stock rise after a successful season leading Tennessee to an SEC title. On the other hand, Sheppard, a true freshman from Kentucky, has been making waves despite coming off the bench for the Wildcats.

Knecht, a fifth-year player who transferred from Northeastern Junior College to Northern Colorado before landing at Tennessee, is known for his scoring ability and athleticism. He has been a key contributor for the Volunteers and could potentially lead them to a top seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament. Sheppard, on the other hand, has impressed with his shooting efficiency, defensive prowess, and overall versatility on the court.

While the draft class may be lacking in star power, the potential of Knecht and Sheppard being selected in the top five adds an intriguing narrative to an otherwise unremarkable draft year. It remains to be seen whether these two players will live up to the hype and make an impact at the next level. Regardless, their success could pave the way for a resurgence of white American players in the NBA, following in the footsteps of legends like Kevin Love, Larry Bird, and Tom Chambers.

In a draft class filled with uncertainties, the emergence of Knecht and Sheppard as potential top picks brings a new level of excitement and intrigue to the NBA Draft. Only time will tell if these two players can live up to expectations and make a lasting impact on the league.
