Christian Walker, D-backs outlast Padres in extras

The Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres faced off in an intense matchup on July 6, 2024, at Petco Park in San Diego, California. The game went into extra innings, with the Diamondbacks ultimately coming out on top with a 7-5 victory.

The game-winning moment came in the top of the 10th inning when Christian Walker delivered a clutch two-run single, driving in the go-ahead runs for Arizona. The Diamondbacks’ offense was sparked by Corbin Carroll, who was placed at second base to start the inning, and Geraldo Perdomo, who laid down a bunt for a hit that set the stage for Walker’s heroics.

In addition to Walker’s key hit, Jake McCarthy also contributed to the scoring with a run on a fielder’s choice grounder, helping the Diamondbacks secure the win. The Padres put up a fight, with Ha-Seong Kim delivering a crucial RBI double in the eighth inning to send the game into extra innings.

On the pitching side, Ryan Thompson earned the win for the Diamondbacks, tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Humberto Castellanos closed out the game and secured his first career save, shutting down the Padres in the 10th inning.

Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision, as Brandon Pfaadt of the Diamondbacks and Matt Waldron of the Padres both put in solid performances before exiting the game. Pfaadt was forced to leave the game after being struck in the leg by a line drive, sustaining a left ankle contusion. Despite the injury, Pfaadt had a strong outing, scattering seven hits over 4 1/3 innings with six strikeouts. Waldron pitched six-plus innings for the Padres, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out six.

Overall, it was a hard-fought battle between the Diamondbacks and the Padres, with the Diamondbacks ultimately coming out on top in a thrilling extra-inning victory. The win was a much-needed boost for Arizona as they looked to gain momentum in the season, while the Padres will look to bounce back in the next game.
