China Reclaims Top Spender Spot as Asia-Pacific Tourism Soar, UN Tourism


The latest data from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has revealed that China has reclaimed its position as the top spender in international tourism, as Asia-Pacific tourism continues to soar. According to the UNWTO’s Tourism Barometer, China accounted for $277.3 billion in international tourism expenditure in 2019, representing a 14% increase from the previous year.

This surge in Chinese tourism expenditure has been driven by a growing middle class with disposable income, as well as an increasing number of outbound travelers. The UNWTO has called for sustainable tourism practices to be implemented to ensure that the benefits of tourism are shared equitably and that destinations are protected for future generations.
