Capitals promote Chris Patrick to senior VP and GM

The Washington Capitals have announced a significant change in their front office, promoting Chris Patrick to senior vice president and general manager. This move comes as Brian MacLellan, who has served as the team’s GM for the past 10 seasons, transitions to the role of president of hockey operations.

Patrick, who recently completed his 16th season with the Capitals, moves into the general manager position after serving as the team’s associate GM. He originally joined the franchise in 2008-09 in a player development and scouting role, demonstrating his dedication and commitment to the organization over the years.

In a statement announcing the promotion, team owner Ted Leonsis expressed his confidence in Patrick’s abilities, praising his vision, experience, and hockey acumen. Leonsis believes that Patrick is the perfect leader to drive the team forward and is confident that he will thrive in his new role.

On the other hand, MacLellan, who will remain with the organization as president of hockey operations, has been instrumental in the team’s success over the past decade. During his tenure as GM from 2014-24, the Capitals recorded the third-most wins in the NHL and won their first Stanley Cup in 2018.

Leonsis commended MacLellan for his leadership, experience, and vision for the team, highlighting his role in bringing the Stanley Cup to Washington and maintaining the team’s competitiveness. The owner believes that the combination of MacLellan’s expertise and Patrick’s track record positions the team’s hockey operations for a successful future.

As the Capitals look ahead to the upcoming seasons, they are confident in the leadership of both MacLellan and Patrick. With a strong foundation in place, the team is poised for continued success on and off the ice.
