Braves, D-backs face off in prime-time pitching matchup

The Atlanta Braves have made a strategic decision to push back the start of their star pitcher, Chris Sale, by one day. This move sets up an exciting pitching matchup between Sale and Arizona Diamondbacks’ Zac Gallen in their upcoming game in Phoenix.

Sale, who currently boasts an impressive record of 11-3 with a 2.71 ERA, is tied for the major league lead in victories. On the other hand, Gallen, with a record of 6-4 and a 3.06 ERA, finished third in the National League Cy Young Award balloting last season.

Originally listed to start on Monday, the Braves opted to scratch Sale in favor of right-hander Bryce Elder, who was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett. This decision was made by Atlanta manager Brian Snitker to give the team’s pitchers an extra day of rest leading into the All-Star break.

The Braves are currently on a three-game winning streak and are looking to extend it with a victory over the Diamondbacks. In their previous game, Atlanta staged a dramatic comeback, eventually winning 5-4 in 11 innings after Sean Murphy hit a game-tying two-run homer in the ninth.

Despite the recent struggles of Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald, manager Torey Lovullo has expressed confidence in his abilities and confirmed that Sewald will remain the team’s closer. Sewald has encountered three consecutive blown saves, but Lovullo believes that Sewald will bounce back from this rough patch.

Sale, who has experienced a career resurgence this season, has been a key player for the Braves. The 35-year-old left-hander has been named to his eighth All-Star team and is currently among the top pitchers in the league in strikeouts and ERA.

Having overcome injuries, including Tommy John surgery in 2020, Sale has demonstrated resilience and determination to return to top form. Since joining the Braves in December and signing a contract extension, Sale has been a reliable presence on the mound for the team.

In their upcoming game, Sale will face off against the Diamondbacks, a team he has had success against in the past. He holds a 2-0 record with a 2.53 ERA in three career games against Arizona. On the offensive side, Randal Grichuk has had success against Sale with two homers, while Ketel Marte has struggled with just one hit in 12 at-bats.

On the other side, Gallen will be looking to continue his strong performances against the Braves. With a 2-0 record and a 2.45 ERA in four career starts against Atlanta, Gallen will aim to shut down the Braves’ lineup.

As both teams prepare for this exciting matchup, fans can expect a thrilling game between two talented pitchers in Sale and Gallen. The outcome of this game could have significant implications for both teams as they continue their respective seasons.
