Billy Horschel Withdraws from 3M Open Due to Illness
Billy Horschel, who had an impressive showing at The Open Championship last weekend where he finished tied for second, unfortunately had to withdraw from the 3M Open on Thursday in Blaine, Minnesota. Alternate Adam Long was inserted into the field in place of Horschel, who cited illness as the reason for his withdrawal.
In a statement posted on social media, Horschel explained, “Unfortunately, had to withdraw from 3M Open. Woke up with a fever, body aches, and back just locked up. Tried to warm up and give it a go but my body just wouldn’t let it happen. Really disappointed to WD as my family and I enjoyed it here last year and we were hoping to improve on a T-12 finish from last year.”
He went on to apologize to the tournament organizers, fans, and everyone involved with the event, expressing his gratitude for the support he received leading up to the tournament. Horschel, 37, had a strong start to the season with a win at the Corales Puntacana Championship in April and currently sits at 26th in the FedEx Cup standings.
Adam Long, 36, who was called in to replace Horschel, has one career win and is ranked 219th in the FedEx Cup standings. While Horschel’s absence is certainly disappointing for fans and organizers, Long will have the opportunity to make his mark at the 3M Open.
The field at the 3M Open remains competitive, and fans can expect an exciting tournament despite Horschel’s withdrawal. We wish Billy Horschel a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the course soon.
