In a shocking turn of events, Democratic strategist Steve Kramer has admitted to being the mastermind behind fraudulent robocalls impersonating President Joe Biden. The calls targeted voters in New Hampshire just days before the primary election, raising concerns about the potential misuse of technology in spreading election misinformation.
Kramer confessed to dispatching an automated call to around 5,000 potential Democratic voters on the night of January 20th. The call featured an AI-generated imitation of President Biden’s voice, created using easily accessible online technology. According to reports, Kramer allegedly hired magician Paul Carpenter to create the robocalls using AI technology, referencing text messages, call records, and Venmo transactions.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns about the misuse of artificial intelligence in elections. The New Hampshire attorney general’s office is currently investigating the robocalls, and the Federal Communications Commission has since prohibited the use of AI-generated voices in such calls.
Kramer emphasized the need for stricter regulations to prevent similar occurrences in the future. He stated that with a mere $500 investment, anyone could replicate the fraudulent calls, urging immediate intervention from regulatory authorities and platforms.
It is important to note that Kramer denied being directed to make the robocalls by his then-client, Rep. Dean Phillips, who is contesting Biden for the Democratic nomination. Phillips’ campaign has disavowed Kramer’s alleged involvement, stating that his actions were not connected to their campaign.
The use of AI-generated deepfakes in spreading election misinformation poses a significant threat to the integrity of U.S. elections. The White House has expressed alarm over the circulation of false images and voice alterations of public figures, including President Biden.
The robocall incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of technology in the political sphere. As authorities continue to investigate the matter, it is crucial to remain vigilant against the misuse of AI in elections and take steps to safeguard the democratic process.
