Apple Thanks Man Charged With Defrauding Them Of $2.5M, Reason Remains Unclear: Report – Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)

In a surprising twist, Apple Inc. recently made headlines by publicly acknowledging a man charged with defrauding the company of approximately $2.5 million worth of gift cards and products. The man in question, Noah Roskin-Frazee, a San Francisco resident, was thanked by Apple in a security update on January 22, two weeks after his arrest. The reason behind Apple’s acknowledgment remains unclear.

According to reports, Roskin-Frazee is a security researcher who had previously reported issues to Apple. However, the indictment filed in December charged him and a co-defendant with counts including fraud and intentionally damaging a protected computer. The indictment details an elaborate scheme in which the defendants used a password reset function to break into an employee’s account. They then altered orders for items such as gift cards and devices, sometimes reducing the orders to zero or having gift cards sent to fake addresses, which they subsequently resold.

Despite Apple not being explicitly named in the indictment, it is worth noting that the company is headquartered in Cupertino, California, and is involved in the development, manufacture, licensing, support, and sale of computer software, consumer electronics, personal computers, and services.

This incident is not the first time an Apple employee has been involved in fraudulent activities. In April, a former Apple employee was sentenced to prison for stealing approximately $17 million from the company through wire fraud. Another former Apple employee of Indian origin was also sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to pay over $19 million for conspiring to defraud the tech giant and related tax crimes.

The fact that Apple publicly thanked Roskin-Frazee, despite the charges against him, raises questions about the company’s motivations and the potential implications of this gesture. Apple has yet to respond to requests for comment on the matter.

It is essential for companies like Apple to have robust security measures in place to protect against fraud and cyber threats. Incidents like these serve as a reminder of the importance of constant vigilance and the need for ongoing efforts to safeguard sensitive information and resources.

As this story continues to unfold, it will be interesting to see how Apple addresses the situation and what steps the company takes to prevent similar incidents in the future.
