Amazon’s AWS Vs. Microsoft’s Azure Vs. Google Cloud: Which Company Won The Cloud Race In Q4? – Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN)

Cloud Titans Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet: A Look at Their Q4 Cloud Performance

Cloud computing has become an increasingly critical sector of the technology industry, and the latest earnings reports from Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet shed light on the performance of their respective cloud businesses. These three companies, often referred to as the “cloud titans,” are leading the charge in this high-margin sector.

Amazon’s cloud business, Amazon Web Services (AWS), continues to dominate the market. In the fourth quarter, AWS reported revenue of $24.20 billion, representing a 13% year-over-year growth and a 5% sequential increase. This growth is particularly noteworthy considering that AWS had experienced a slowdown in the previous quarters, with year-over-year growth declining from 28% to 12%. The operating profit from AWS rose by an impressive 38% to $7.17 billion, with an operating margin of 39%. AWS accounted for 14.24% of Amazon’s total revenue and a significant 54.26% of its operating income, helping to offset the operating loss incurred by the company’s international e-commerce business.

Microsoft’s cloud business, Azure, is steadily gaining ground on AWS. In the December quarter, Azure’s revenue contributed $25.9 billion to Microsoft’s total revenue of $62 billion, marking a 20% year-over-year growth. Excluding the currency impact, Azure’s growth was a more modest 19%. The Intelligent Cloud business, which includes Azure, experienced revenue growth driven by Azure’s 30% growth, accelerating from 29% in the previous quarter. Microsoft does not provide a specific breakdown of Azure’s revenue, but CEO Satya Nadella mentioned that the company now has 53,000 Azure AI customers, with over one-third being new customers in the past year. CFO Amy Hood added that six percentage points of Azure’s growth came from AI services. Overall, Microsoft’s cloud revenue grew 24% to $33.7 billion, with a gross margin of 72%.

Alphabet’s cloud business, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), also reported solid numbers in the fourth quarter. GCP generated $9.19 billion in revenue, a 25.66% increase from the previous year. This growth rate surpassed the 22.47% growth recorded in the third quarter. GCP’s revenue accounted for approximately 10.65% of Alphabet’s total revenue and generated an operating income of $864 million.

While Amazon remains the leader in terms of absolute cloud revenue dollars, Microsoft’s Azure demonstrated the fastest growth, closely followed by Google Cloud Platform. Microsoft’s lead in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies positions the company for strong growth in the mid- to long-term.

Investors responded positively to the earnings reports, with Amazon’s stock rising 7.87% to $171.81, Microsoft’s stock increasing 1.84% to $411.22, and Alphabet’s stock gaining 0.86% to $142.38.

The cloud computing market shows no signs of slowing down, and these three companies are well-positioned to capitalize on the increasing demand for cloud services. As more businesses and organizations transition to the cloud, Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet will continue to compete for market dominance, driving innovation and pushing the boundaries of cloud technology.
