AEW’s Cash Wheeler going to trial for assault with firearm charge

AEW Star Cash Wheeler to Stand Trial for Aggravated Assault with a Firearm

AEW star Cash Wheeler, one-half of the tag team FTR, is set to go to trial in Florida on May 20 for his aggravated assault with a firearm charge. The wrestler, whose real name is Daniel Wheeler, did not appear in court recently but was arraigned, with his attorney entering a not-guilty plea on his behalf. Wheeler is required to appear at a pre-trial hearing scheduled for May 7.

If convicted, the third-degree felony carries a fine of $5,000, up to five years in prison, and up to five years of probation. The charge stems from an incident on July 27, 2023, where Wheeler allegedly flashed a gun during a road rage incident. A warrant was filed the following day, and Wheeler turned himself in to the police in August.

According to the incident report, the victim, Daniel Matta, claimed that Wheeler pointed a black semi-automatic handgun at him during the altercation. The responding officer, Cpl. Mitchell Bowhay, noted in the report that Matta saw Wheeler with a strong stare while brandishing the weapon.

After Wheeler’s arrest, AEW released a statement saying, “AEW has been made aware of the charge, and we are closely monitoring the situation. He is fully cooperating with local authorities.” Wheeler, who previously wrestled under the name Dash Wilder in WWE, has held numerous tag team titles throughout his career, including the AEW Tag Team Championship, Ring of Honor Tag Team Championship, New Japan Pro-Wrestling Tag Team Championship, and AAA World Tag Team Championship.

The duo of FTR, consisting of Wheeler and his partner Dax Harwood, have also won the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship twice and the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship once.

As the trial date approaches, fans and colleagues alike are watching closely to see how the legal proceedings unfold for Cash Wheeler.
