Diamondbacks keep hot stretch going by edging Pirates

The Arizona Diamondbacks secured a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates in an exciting matchup at Chase Field on Friday night. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. played a key role in the Diamondbacks’ win, contributing three hits and scoring the tiebreaking run on a wild pitch.

The game started off with the Pirates scoring three runs in the first two innings against Arizona ace Zac Gallen. However, the Diamondbacks fought back and scored their first run in the bottom of the third inning when Corbin Carroll tripled to right and Ketel Marte followed with a sacrifice fly to left.

Arizona’s offense came alive in the sixth inning, with Joe Pederson leading off with a 453-foot homer to right center off Pittsburgh starter Luis Ortiz. This was Pederson’s 15th home run of the season. Christian Walker then walked, prompting Ortiz’s exit from the game. Carmen Mlodzinski entered as the new pitcher and allowed a single to Gurriel and a run-scoring single to Gabriel Moreno to tie the game at 3-3.

The decisive moment came when Mlodzinski threw a wild pitch to Alex Thomas, allowing Gurriel to score from third and giving Arizona a 4-3 lead. The Diamondbacks’ bullpen held strong in the final innings, with Ryan Thompson and Paul Sewald shutting down the Pirates to secure the win.

Gallen, who gave up three runs and five hits in six-plus innings, earned the win for Arizona. The Pirates’ Ortiz was charged with three runs and five hits over five-plus innings.

Overall, it was a hard-fought game between two competitive teams, but the Diamondbacks ultimately emerged victorious. With this win, Arizona continues to build momentum as they strive for success in the remainder of the season.
