CF Montreal trade F Mason Toye to Timbers

The Portland Timbers made a significant move on Tuesday by acquiring veteran forward Mason Toye from CF Montreal in exchange for a second-round draft pick in 2025. This trade not only adds depth to the Timbers’ attacking options but also provides Toye with a fresh start in a new environment.

Toye, 25, has been a consistent performer in Major League Soccer, having played in parts of seven seasons since joining the league. He began his career with Minnesota United before moving to Montreal in 2020. Throughout his MLS career, Toye has scored a total of 20 goals and provided six assists in 106 matches.

The forward’s best season came in 2021 when he scored seven goals in just 14 appearances for CF Montreal. Although his production has dipped slightly this season with just one goal in 12 matches, Toye still possesses the talent and potential to make a significant impact for the Timbers.

In addition to the draft pick, Montreal will also receive $200,000 in general allocation money in 2025 if Toye meets certain performance metrics or contractual obligations. This further highlights the belief that both clubs have in the forward’s abilities and potential to succeed in the league.

Toye has also represented the United States at the youth national team levels, showcasing his pedigree and potential on the international stage. His experience and versatility in the attack make him a valuable addition to any squad looking to bolster their offensive options.

Timbers general manager Ned Grabavoy expressed his excitement about the acquisition, emphasizing Toye’s ability to provide the team with another attacking option as they compete in Leagues Cup play and aim for a strong finish to the 2024 MLS season. The Timbers are eager to integrate Toye into the team quickly and maximize his contributions on the field.

Overall, the trade represents a win-win situation for both the Timbers and Montreal, as they each address their respective needs and bolster their squads for the remainder of the season. With Toye’s arrival, the Timbers add a talented and experienced forward to their roster, setting the stage for an exciting partnership as they push for success in MLS and beyond.
