The PGA of America is set to announce the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup captain on Tuesday, and it looks like Tiger Woods will not be taking on the role. Woods, who was considered the frontrunner for the position, has reportedly declined the offer.
According to a report from the Telegraph, Woods was looking for a reduced role in the captaincy, but he and the PGA of America could not come to an agreement on what that would entail. As a result, Woods has decided to pass on the opportunity to lead the U.S. team in the prestigious event.
With Woods out of the running, there are several other potential candidates for the position. Previous captains Zach Johnson, Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, and Davis Love III are all possible choices, along with Fred Couples, Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Rickie Fowler, and Phil Mickelson.
The announcement of the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup captain will be made by PGA of America president John Lindert at the NASDAQ building in New York. The event will be broadcast on Golf Channel and SiriusXM, and will also be livestreamed on the PGA’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.
The 2025 Ryder Cup will take place from Sept. 26-28 at Bethpage Black on Long Island, New York. Luke Donald will return as the European captain, after leading his team to victory in Rome in 2023.
