Mets activate closer Edwin Diaz following suspension

The New York Mets made a significant roster move on Saturday by activating their closer, Edwin Diaz, after he served a 10-game suspension for violating MLB’s policy on foreign substances. Diaz, who has been a key part of the Mets’ bullpen, returns to the team as they continue their weekend series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Before his suspension, Diaz had been performing well for the Mets. The 30-year-old reliever had picked up two saves and a win since coming off the injured list on June 13 due to a shoulder injury. On the season, Diaz has a 2-1 record with a 4.70 ERA and has converted seven saves in 11 opportunities.

In addition to Diaz’s return, the Mets also made another roster move by calling up right-hander Eric Orze from Triple-A Syracuse. Orze, the Mets’ fifth-round pick in the 2020 draft, is set to make his major league debut after impressing in the minor leagues. The 26-year-old pitcher had a stellar season at Syracuse, going 3-0 with a 3.76 ERA and recording 56 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings over 26 games.

To make room for Orze on the roster, the Mets optioned right-hander Ty Adcock to Triple-A Syracuse. Adcock, 27, struggled in his limited appearances for the Mets this season, posting a 14.54 ERA in three relief outings.

The Mets will be hoping that Diaz’s return and Orze’s debut will provide a boost to their bullpen as they continue their push for a playoff spot. With the NL East race heating up, every game is crucial for the Mets as they look to secure a postseason berth.
