Lionel Messi returned to practice Monday for Argentina as the national team prepares to face Ecuador in a Copa America quarterfinal matchup Thursday in Houston.
Messi had not practiced since he sustained a right groin/thigh injury during his side’s 1-0 win against Chile on June 25. He sat out Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Peru on Saturday.
According to the Argentine football federation, Messi “did some kinesiology work before training and was with the rest of the group afterwards.”
The 37-year-old star has battled injuries the past two seasons while playing for Inter Miami in MLS. He missed six matches last season because of a leg injury and six more this season.
Despite his absences this year due to health issues and international duty, Messi has 12 goals, tied for fourth most in MLS, in 12 matches. He was named to the MLS All-Star Game roster Monday.
